A feature about working children published in Patriot (Hindi), 11 January 1970 Patriot (Hindi) 11 January 1970

-
Image

-
Image
A scene from Dharm, a powerful movie on communal riots NK SINGH CHAIBASA  - the headquarter of the adivasi district of Singhbhum - has about 30,000 people, of whom eight thousand are Muslims. A considerable number of East Pakistan refugees too live in this clumsy town. Since it is not an industrial area, Chaibasa has not got many working class people. In the last mid-term elections, the Jharkhand Party had won the seat of Chaibasa, which is a reserved constituency. No municipal elections have been held here for 12 years. Mr Sita Ram Rungta , a local bigwig is the city father. The  Jana Sangh  and  RSS  are quite active here and Shakhas, rallies are organised by them regularly. There had never been any communal riot at Chaibasa. It remained unaffected even during the widespread riots in 1964 which enveloped the district including the steel city of Jamshedpur. What has Scindia gained by leaving Congress

-
Image
Jyotiraditya Scindia. Pic credit Picasa NK SINGH Almost overnight, Jyotiraditya Scindia has become a power to reckon with in Madhya Pradesh politics. With no party securing absolute majority in 2018 assembly election, he and his group of 22 followers are in a position to make or mar any government. Using that bargaining clout, the Scindia group has become adapt in cornering disproportionate share in power in every Government that it is part of. The group commanded the loyalty of only 19 MLAs in the 114-member Congress Legislature Party when Kamal Nath Government came to power in December 2018. Yet it managed to get as many as 6 ministerial berths in the 29-strong cabinet! The group pulled off an even better performance after it crossed over to the BJP side. In Shivraj Singh Chouhan government, it has managed to corner 14 berths in the 34-member ministry – almost 40 per cent share! More significantly, none of these 14 ministers are MLAs at present, having resigned from th...

Nostalgia: Frontier & Utpal Dutt

-
Image
Utpal Dutt with Satyajit Ray NK SINGH In the late '60s and early '70s,  Frontier , the Left magazine edited by Samar Sen , used to carry regularly advertisements of E pic Theatre , a magazine devoted to theatre.  Like Frontier, Epic Theatre too was published from Calcutta, now Kolkata. T he Editor of Epic Theatre was the leading light of Bengal's vibrant theatre movement,  Utpal Dutt .  The magazine's name was, apparently, based on Bertolt Brecht ’s Epic Theatre movement . Dutt was not only an advertiser, but also a frequent contributor to Frontier , particularly in its early days. Epic Theatre’ s April issue, whose advertisement is carried below, was a Lenin special, containing inter alia, the full script of Dutt’s firebrand political play Leniner Dak , Lenin’s Call. (The link takes you to a song , Leniner Dak Shuni. ) The association between Samar Sen and Utpal Dutt goes back a long way. In the '60s when Sen used to edit Now, the magazine's Deput...

-
Image
Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav.

The Book That Shook the British Empire

-
Image
Sunderlal (far left) walking with Gandhi ji to Birla House prayer meeting NK SINGH Among the most extraordinary people I have met, and interviewed as a journalist, was Gandhian scholar Pandit Sunderlal  (1886-1981). Pandit Sunderlal had become a legend in his lifetime. He was better known as the author of Bharat Mein Angrezi Raj , a 1,000-page tome in Hindi, whose publication in 1929 shook the British Empire. The Raj banned the book within four days of its publication. However, by that time its 1,700 copies had already reached the readers. The Government launched a massive drive to confiscate the printed copies of the book, raiding almost 1,000 houses of citizens across the country who were suspected to possess its copies. However, revolutionaries resorted to clandestine circulation of the banned book that exposed, with facts and figures, the colonial policy of ‘divide and rule’ to subjugate India. To possess and read the ‘subversive’ book became a matter of p...

Ho Chi Minh: Father of Modern Vietnam

-
Image
Jawaharlal Nehru with Ho Chi Minh, Pic credit Wikimedia NK SINGH Dr Ho Chi Minh – familiarly known as “Uncle Ho” – is a legend among North and South Vietnamese alike. No leader of a small nation has ever left so deep an impression on the history of his time as Uncle Ho. There are many others who have led their people to independence from colonial rule. But no one has had to face the kind of desperate odds Ho had to in waging armed struggle against a host of adversaries for so long a time. Ho Chi Minh belonged to the generation of Gandhi and Nehru, the Asian generation that challenged the defeated the 200-year-old imperialism of Europe. He was to Vietnamese what Gandhi was to Indians. Nehru said about him: “Judged by any standard, he is most remarkable man of our time.” Uncle Ho’s life was a story of struggle. He was born on 19 th May 1890. He was originally named Nguyen That Thanh or Nguyen Van Thanh. His father Nguyen Sinh Huy, a scholarly aristocrat in court, w...

Princely feuds : Court battles

Maharani Gayatri Devi, Pic credit - Economic Times Palace intrigues amongst royal families all over the country these days revolve around the valuable real estate of the palaces themselves  N K SINGH Published in India Today , 31 January 1994 Blood is meant to be thicker than water. Except, it seems, when it is blue blood. Ever since the Government abolished privy purses in 1972, reducing the illustrious descendants of the sun, the moon and the gods to mere commoners, it was generally assumed that palace intrigues amongst India's erstwhile rulers would disappear into a kind of royal Jurassic Park. But, if anything, they seem determined to survive into the 21st century. Many of the descendants of the 565 princes, who once ruled over one-third of India, are engaged in fierce battles with their relatives for a share in the family fortunes in what seems like a contemporary replay of a classical era when maharajas would disinherit sons and brothers and engage in nefar...
